Title: In Hot Water: Impacts of PFAS Exposure under Climate Change Conditions
Abstract: In the wild, organisms rarely contend with just one stressor at a time. This is especially true in light of our changing climate. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are now global environmental contaminants and we have no way to remediate them on a large scale in the environment. This brings up the question: how will organisms be impacted by PAS exposure under warming conditions? To answer this question, we exposed an estuarine fish, sheepshead minnow, to PFAS chemicals under three temperature scenarios for 28 days. We found that the combined exposure of PFAS and high temperature can impact multiple organismal endpoints, emphasizing the need for more research addressing contaminant impacts under varying environmental conditions.
