Title: From Data to Indicator: The Development of Climate Indicators for U.S. Assessment Reports
Abstract: To evaluate the impacts of climate change, it is essential to first understand the many ways in which our climate is changing. Climate indicators—observations and measurements used to track environmental conditions, trends, and impacts—provide this foundational scientific information. Indicators are an important and effective climate communication tool and are therefore featured in many U.S. climate assessments, such as the recently released Fifth National Climate Assessment, which for the first time included a section of the report dedicated to indicators. This presentation will outline the importance and utility of climate indicators and look at all the components needed to develop a high-quality indicator, from data acquisition to final figure development. It will also discuss the future of indicators in a world where communicating climate risks and impacts to society are more important than ever.
