Title: Landslides in Western North Carolina, USA
Abstract: While most media accounts of landslides in the United States focus on the western states of California or Washington, many landslides also occur in the Appalachian mountains on the eastern side of the US. Over 6,700+ landslides have been identified in Western North Carolina through mapping efforts by the North Carolina Geological Survey and the private firm, Appalachian Landslide Consultants, PLLC. The majority of these landslides were triggered by rainfall events. There are a variety of types of landslides that occur in WNC including debris flows, rock falls, rock slides, debris slides and weathered rock slides. This talk will illustrate examples of these different landslide type, the rainfall triggering events, and the mapping efforts being undertaken to help increase awareness of landslide hazards.
