PAUSE Webinar – May 8th

Speaker: Dr. Helena Mitasova
North Carolina State University
Title: Environmental Modeling with Open Source GIS
Abstract: Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA) at NC State is an interdisciplinary research and education center focused on mapping dynamic earth, modeling complex processes through space and time, and creating new tools for visualizing and interacting with spatial data. In the center’s Geoforall laboratory, we focus on development of free and open source geospatial tools and applications, adaptable for others to use. In this webinar I will present several interdisciplinary projects where our open source tools enhance understanding of coastal landform dynamics, improve street-level stormwater runoff and flooding simulations, and provide geospatial support for environmental and public health monitoring. I will then introduce Immersive Tangible Landscape, a collaborative problem solving environment which couples a physical and a digital model of a landscape with projected simulation feedback and realistic 3D rendering. I will discuss applications of the system for research, education and outreach activities and finish with a 3D virtual tour of the CGA geovisualization laboratory.
