Title: Big stories in tiny shells: Using microfossils to understand long-term climate change
Abstract: To understand climate dynamics on timescales longer than we can observe in a human lifespan, we must turn to proxy records. The shells of planktic foraminifera, single-celled marine calcifiers, are the basis for many of these proxies. I will discuss how the morphology and chemistry of shells of planktic foraminifera can be used to extend records of climate change into the past. I will then focus on a recent example and discuss how proxy records demonstrate that the structure of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific water column shifted along with rapid warming during the last deglaciation.
