PAUSE Webinar – December 9th

Speaker: Dr. Lily Hughes
North Carolina State University
Title: Natural History Collections Fuel Biodiversity Research
Abstract: Natural history collections of scientific specimens provide foundational data for Earth’s organisms, past and present. As Curator of Ichthyology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, I oversee a large collection of 1.4 million specimens of fishes from across the globe. This collection provides data to diverse researchers developing their own questions on biodiversity, as well as my own research using genomics to understand the systematics and evolution of fishes. I will showcase the broad scientific value of natural history collections, then share my current research on the taxonomy of an imperiled species of sucker fish, and then explore how past climate change shaped the modern-day distributions of lampreys.
