Title: Taps, Toilets and Dirt Floors: Filling the Gaps in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Research to Achieve Transformative Solutions
Abstract: The world faces an enormous water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) challenge: 2 billion people across the globe did not use a safely managed drinking water service in 2020, and 771 million people still lacked even a basic drinking water service. Disparities in services and infrastructure are clear; nearly half of the global underserved lived in sub-Saharan Africa. These disparities will be exacerbated by global climate change and emerging infectious threats. One of the keys to addressing this challenge are technological improvements that can improve the access of underserved communities to safe and sustainable water and sanitation services that are resilient to emerging global challenges. However, recent robust trials of basic WaSH interventions at the household- and community-level have found modest or no effects on health, suggesting that these approaches are not effective as currently implemented. Within the WaSH sector, there is a growing understanding that what is needed is a transformative approach that includes consideration of how technical approaches are integrated within the context of communities.
