Title: Municipal Solid Waste Management in Capital and Adjacent City of Pakistan: Challenges and Potential of Research
Abstract: Pakistan is the 5th most populous country in the world and is facing rapid urbanization concomitant with greater rates of municipal solid waste generation. Managing greater quantities of municipal solid waste is still a challenge. This talk will first introduce the current system of municipal solid waste management generally in Pakistan and specifically in twin cities (Rawalpindi and Islamabad) of Pakistan. A few studies will be discussed that have been conducted with my students on different aspects of municipal solid waste in twin cities e.g. waste characterization, determination of calorific value from waste to see the waste to energy potential, greenhouse gas determination from different activities of waste management and finally a strategic environmental assessment of municipal solid waste management system of Rawalpindi.
