Title: Climate Research applied to Tropical Environments
Abstract: When one thinks of a tropical climate, the first image that may come to mind is heat and rain, followed perhaps by a pristine sunny beach. The climate of the tropics is in fact highly variable in space and time. For example, rainforests are very sensitive to droughts at various timescales, which can impact their ecosystems as well as economic activities in and around them. One such impact is fires that are used to burn debris following deforestation and to clear agricultural land for planting. Fires are not natural to the rainforests and can gradually degrade this ecosystem, especially when they spread into the forests in dry years. In this talk, we will discuss how climate variability and change can impact tropical environments, with a focus on fires and rainfed agriculture.
