PAUSE Webinar – March 20th

Speaker: Dr. Saima Hamid
Vice Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Women University
Title: Climate Change: In View of Public Health and Gender Equality
Abstract: Climate change is a “threat multiplier” as it escalates social, political and economic tensions in fragile and conflict-affected settings. While we experience disproportionate impacts from climate change at the global level, the effects are not uniform. Research indicates that the abrupt changes in climate patterns are increasing the spread of vector-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, etc. which are linked to worse maternal and neonatal outcomes in underprivileged areas of the world. Pakistan is being engulfed by colossal changes of the climate where the risks are more acute for our indigenous women living in remote and disaster-prone areas. Through the lens of public health and gender parity, this talk will shed light on how climate change is intersecting with other inequalities for women. The current role of Pakistani ministries and varsities particularly that of FJWU, in capacity-building and women empowerment for a better climate will also be underscored in detail. It is the need of the hour to bear a proportionate responsibility for securing climate for our future generations.
