Title: Climate Change Impacts on Mental Health During Pregnancy and Early Childhood
Abstract: The climate crisis, in combination with other social and environmental stressors, negatively influences human health; its impact varies across age groups and life stages. Pregnancy and early childhood are understudied critical windows of susceptibility. Few studies have focused on the impact of exposure to climate stressors on pregnant populations, infants, and children in the Southeastern US, despite pronounced trends in climate warming. This talk will examine the disproportionate impact of ambient temperature extremes on women and children. We will take a closer look at two case studies including: 1) a case-crossover study on the association between hot ambient temperature extremes and emergency department admissions for psychiatric disorders in pregnant populations; 2) a spatial clustering study + random effects meta-regression to identify high risk clusters of pediatric emergency department admissions for mental health.
